ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of the virtual instructor as a decision maker and facilitator. The virtual instructor serves as a facilitator/coach who supports students to become self-directed and confident learners and we provide tips on ways to do this within the virtual environment while building cognitive presence leading to deeper learning. In the context of virtual teaching and learning, the role of decision maker includes decisions about what content is being taught and how that content is being taught. Virtual learning should provide a level of flexibility to both faculty and students. Virtual learning that is flexible can also increase access across diverse populations, engage learners in deeper learning, and allow for challenges that may arise in life.
