ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on providing tips, tools, and templates on how to create a space that is positive for social emotional learning, which will include check-ins with our students. Interaction in a virtual environment is far more difficult than in a face-to-face classroom. Soft background music in a virtual classroom can help support focus and learning in the students. Background music can also be played while students are actively engaged in an online activity. Social-emotional learning plays a critical role in our virtual classrooms, as we take on the role of virtual instructor as a supporter. Polling is a simple way to gauge how students are feeling by asking them a series of questions and then they respond accordingly in real time. Icebreakers are commonly used to encourage students to participate and have conversations with each other.
