ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the roles of the virtual instructor as content expert and diversity, equity, and inclusion guide. Virtual environments are enhanced when learners can build content knowledge specifically with asynchronous instruction. Asynchronous instruction allows learners to engage with the content in the most effective and flexible ways that works for them and their schedules. The chapter discusses how asynchronous instruction helps increase cognition, remove educational barriers, and build social, teaching, and cognitive presence within a virtual environment. It discusses how asynchronous sessions allow flexibility and provide greater access and diversity to our students when planned intentionally and thoughtfully. Virtual environments work best when there is a mix of asynchronous and synchronous instruction and where learners feel connected to the content, to each other, and to their instructor.
