ABSTRACT
Given the expanding expectations for accreditation, the Baldrige approach has much to offer higher education as an assessment, planning, improvement, and innovation methodology. It shares basic elements of the accreditation framework and offers some additional benefits as well. Baldrige-based models typically incorporate a rigorous methodology and extensive annual multiday training sessions for examiners to facilitate the consistent application of the standards across individuals, institutions, and settings. Traditionally, Baldrige assessment also includes quantitative and qualitative ratings by examiners for each of the standards. The goal is to provide precise documentation about the level of accomplishment and also to provide a baseline for comparisons over time and with other organizations. The EHE framework can be used to serve a variety of purposes. EHE articulates standards of excellence and effectiveness for any institution, department, or program, and it does so in a way that adapts itself quite naturally to the particular mission of an organization.
