ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance for mentors to develop realistic expectations for the mentoring relationship, and it offers other ideas for benefits mentors may not have expected. Faculty members at university greatly appreciate participating in a mentoring group with other new faculty members across campus. As these groups are meant to be support groups, the size of the group should not be more than six to eight. With a small number of people, each member of the group can have the opportunity to speak. A group in which the participants change every week will not bond well and will be a disappointing experience. Mentees report that participating in these cross-disciplinary groups gave them a broader perspective of the university community. They also found that it was very illuminating to hear that others were having the same concerns and that they weren’t alone in their worries or stressors.
