ABSTRACT

This chapter provides major points surfacing from the literature on formalized mentoring both in regard to inter- and intradepartmental mentoring and university-wide mentoring programs. There is also increased pressure today on new faculty members to secure external funding for their research that is often now part of the requirements for achieving tenure at some institutions. Formal mentoring programs address this issue as educational settings find that institutions with such programs report increased research income and publication rates. The chapter also provides reported program descriptions that indicate several logistical issues that a department and/or university needs to consider and plan before it begins a new faculty mentoring program. Mentoring programs in higher education traditionally have involved individual mentoring. When following a departmental or school-wide mentoring format, establishing mentoring pairs between departments may be one way to address and avoid these challenges.
