ABSTRACT

The course is populated mostly by students majoring in engineering, with students in the life sciences forming another large constituency. The course satisfies a core general education requirement at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and is a gateway course to many higher-level mathematics and science courses. Class time was focused on communicating normative explanations of ideas and on modeling problem-solving steps, through lecture. Due to its heavy emphasis on writing, the course satisfies a university “supplemental writing skills” (SWS) course requirement. Student comments from the course evaluations tell a story of growing self-regulatory abilities. Student activities in the group space were quite varied. Nwosisi’s networking students worked on lab activities involving computer networks designed to drive home conceptual understanding. Online and hybrid courses are increasingly common across the higher education spectrum and pose interesting questions for flipped learning.
