ABSTRACT

Progress in cognitive science and neuroscience can eventually make a significant contribution to this goal. Some aspects of this contribution will be technical, but they will also lead to changes in perspective. It is actually fortunate that our understanding of learning and our sophisticated technological tools have appeared more or less simultaneously. This offers an opportunity to combine them so that they serve each other and, perhaps, ultimately lead to dramatic synergy between them. Cognitive science will give us insight into comprehension and manipulation, and technology will provide speed and power. It is a challenge to identify a primary purpose in education, and there are more challenges ahead. Even if the authors agree on this purpose, they may not know how to achieve it. It is good to acknowledge the need for a change of purpose, but more complicated to know how to accomplish the change.
