ABSTRACT

Collaborative online international learning (COIL) is an outward-facing approach to education that sees great promise in connecting across networks to other institutions, teachers, and students—all who may see or experience the world differently. Once the initiating committee or working group has begun to act as a team and develop a plan, time should be dedicated to determining what its leadership will look like during the launch and piloting phase, as well as how it might gradually evolve over time. Most often the first structural step is to define and then appoint a COIL virtual exchange (VE) coordinator. A good example of the benefits of shared resources can be observed when COIL VE training workshops are developed. An institutional professional development culture is primarily the amount and type of professional development or training that instructors at an institution are familiar with, will usually accepts, or which may be mandated.
