ABSTRACT

What in a traditional faculty career (actually, mine was never “traditional”) does a faculty person do after reaching the apex of the career ladder in terms of institutional designation of rank, the full professorship? In other words, “OK, John, you are 36 years old; now you are supposed to be all grown up; what are you going to do for the rest of your life?” One colleague, a PhD-level, full-time counselor in the university’s counseling center suggested to me an answer: “John, all you have to do now is come into the office, turn off the lights, and go to sleep!”
