ABSTRACT

The democratic model is based on McGregor's Theory Y suppositions, in which leaders use their influence to encourage participation, support employees’ efforts, and encourage employees to assert their input toward accomplishing organizational goals. Group decision making underscores democratic leadership. Leaders using the democratic model focus on the interests of organizational affiliates by supporting professional development of staff, continually providing them with feedback for improvement, and using a collaborative form of leadership as a means to share power. Although using democratic leadership as the primary leadership approach can be time-consuming, the benefits of having collective input are great. Nevarez & Wood –Democratic Leadership Inventory is designed to provide a personal profile of democratic leadership. It consists of statements that denote behaviors, thoughts, and dispositions contained within the tenets of democratic leadership. Two internal consistency estimates were employed to examine the reliability of the democratic leadership inventory: split-half coefficient and coefficient alpha.
