ABSTRACT
Liberal education is not a luxury. Thinking critically, evaluating information, solving problems, and writing and speaking effectively are indispensable capacities of an educated citizen, whatever the income level or career choice. Furthermore, adaptability in the face of change—using these broadly transferrable skills in new and unexpected contexts—is essential to twenty-first-century life.
