ABSTRACT

Judy’s story: For the first few years I was in University Studies, I established and taught in our high school program, Senior Inquiry. In this program, we taught Freshman Inquiry to high school seniors in combined university–high school faculty teams. For one assignment, my teaching team chose three novels related to World War II. Since none of us had read one of the books, we asked a colleague at the high school, who had used that novel in another class, to lead the student group that chose that book. After one of their discussions, she asked the students why they liked the class so much. They told her they liked coming to class every day and dealing with different materials and loved making connections among the discussions and activities in the various fields. She said, “But you took American history and American literature as juniors last year. Didn’t you make the connections then?” The students looked at her blankly and said no.
