ABSTRACT

Reaching the students is a problem that most of my colleagues here in the history department at Temple the author suspect it applies to other fields, as well worry about a lot: the fact that undergraduate students are not terribly well prepared or particularly motivated. What happens, the authors think, is that faculty learn a lot about themselves and their teaching through their reciprocal visits and then they want to talk with others about that learning. In some ways they started TOPS out of ignorance, simply jumping in and seeing what worked. The Featured Faculty Program offers one or two faculty observations a week in a wide range of disciplines. Faculty across campus then register for the observations and attend both the class session and a follow-up discussion with the featured faculty member about what they have observed and experienced.
