ABSTRACT

This chapter uses two participants’ stories in-depth to offer an overview of the journey toward self-authorship. It introduces these two participants, Mark and Gwen, in Knowing and Reasoning in College, and describes their stories to trace the evolution of epistemology during college. Their stories are used to illustrate how the three dimensions (epistemological, intrapersonal and interpersonal) interweave along the pathway toward self-authorship. The chapter explains about four phases of the journey towards self-authorship. These phases include following formulas for success, the crossroads, becoming the author of one's life, and internal foundation. Using their own eyes to make sense of their experience yielded self-authorship. This evolution from formula to foundation and external definition to self-authorship, hinged on progress on all three dimensions of development. Thus the participants’ journeys through their twenties reveal that self-authorship can only be acquired through growth on all three dimensions of development.
