ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an overview of platforms and features so that people can make informed and intentional choices about where they might want to be online as an academic or higher education professional. The Internet runs on the idea of Fear of missing out; it serves as the fuel that keeps people checking their e-mail and social media first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Most platforms will require creating a handle, or naming for use, when in that online space. Instagram is one of the more popular image-sharing platforms, but it is also now widely accepted that including images with posts on spaces like Twitter, Facebook, and Medium helps to get more views from people who are scrolling through a long list of updates. There are several platforms that now allow live video sharing, including Facebook, Periscope, Instagram, and others.
