ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the less widespread support services. These include clubs, counseling, and career services, nonacademic advisement, student activities, childcare, residential life, and other services that are not directly related to a student’s academic work. In other words, those services that support a sense of belonging thereby potentially leading to greater retention and completion. These are different kinds of supports that have been developed to help students navigate the academic system. We begin with a brief description of the co-curriculum and then go on to describe some the support services most effective with adult undergraduates. We also consider the ways that services for specific populations such as veterans and active military, the incarcerated, and students of color add depth to our understanding of these services for adult students.
