ABSTRACT

Generating media coverage is a science and an art. It is not only having a good story and a plan to tell it but also developing a sense of timing, possessing the skill to tell our story, and having an element of luck. Print media include professional journals dedicated to one’s discipline or field of expertise. Successful media relations is a process, not an event. It starts far in advance of writing a press release or contacting a reporter. Reporting the news has always been about getting the story out fast. Reporters, editors, and producers choose their story sources in many of the same ways we might find the name of a good physician or attorney. Academics, scholars, and researchers need to address the subject the reporter is asking about, not something else.
