ABSTRACT

The foundation for news reporting is presenting the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a story. Shortening the distance between the subject and the verb, Roy Peter Clark offers this rewrite, which he believes makes the story more comprehensible. Press or news releases, whether presented on paper or electronically, have their limitations. They do a good job of presenting timely information in a succinct fashion, but they rarely sell a story, as many reporters and editors from major media outlets might tell us. A targeted e-mail is often how reporters want to be contacted about story ideas. The reporter has the option to respond or wait for a follow-up call. Most people don’t like making these story calls to members of the media.
