ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth and in-breadth comparison and contrast of powerful learning communities (LCs) in all delivery formats. One process all delivery methods have in common is the use of online learning management systems/learning content management systems designed to develop, manage, and deliver digital learning content for courses, administration, and university committees. Support staff in maintenance or groundskeeping may be hesitant to share in activities involving formal writing. Face-to-face faculty may feel quite comfortable with public speaking, but less comfortable with computer chats. A designated space or spaces is needed for exchange of ideas and perspectives. LC participants should be oriented and trained to always look for meaningful intellectual connections across the various individual and group activities. Hybrid LCs include an integrated focus on both face-to-face learning and online learning. Powerful hybrid LCs require practitioners to understand and work effectively in both face-to-face and online modes.
