ABSTRACT

In writing this book, I reviewed the reflections and stories of many students. Their reflections have been insightful regarding the numerous ways in which they have experienced cross-cultural engagement and developed different intercultural skills. Their stories illustrate not only the variety of study abroad programs and experiences that exist but also the core challenges of cross-cultural engagement. Those students who devoted the time and energy to meet and interact with local people, students at their host university, and even other international students are better able to articulate the intercultural and global awareness that led them to study abroad than students who remain in “the bubble.”
