ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates on how to transform what we deliver into what we write. The simplest form is language that creates funny images in the minds of the readers. Footnotes serve as an alternative mechanism when sidebars may be too disruptive to the text. The quality of our humor must be high in terms of content, appropriateness, and funniness. A joke that bombs in class or in a presentation can be discarded or revised for future use. The distribution of humor throughout a written document needs to be evaluated not only for where it appears, but also for the amount. Most office correspondence tends to be either information items or requests for a response. The appreciation of our humor within our department or school may not be generalizable to outside consultants and reviewers.
