ABSTRACT

In 2008, the City University of New York (CUNY) began planning a new community college in Manhattan. In 2013, in honor of a $25,000,000 gift to CUNY that included a $15,000,000 endowment to support student learning, the new institution was renamed Stella and Charles Guttman Community College. Many of Guttman’s educational strategies help students develop these academic capabilities. Guttman’s criteria for reappointment, promotion, and tenure are anchored in the college’s mission and principles; they detail how teaching should align with those principles and give examples of relevant evidence about whether that alignment is happening. Guttman has also designed many of its interactions with the wider world in order to better support its Integrative educational strategies. One of Guttman’s educational strategies is to assure that all academic programs are organized around active engagement with New York City and other global centers.
