ABSTRACT

Organizational foundations are attributes of culture, physical space, administrative structure, and policies that have evolved in part to sustain an institution’s long-time educational strategies. This chapter focuses on the widely used and influential organizational foundations to understand their roles and explores one or two ways in which each foundation can be transformed to support Integrative educational strategies. It mentions additional foundations that are common to and influential in institutions shifting toward the Integrative Learning Paradigm. The multi-institution Global Skills for College Completion project was created to promote such faculty–faculty discussions that could develop grounded concepts. Many faculty became convinced that they and staff could positively influence the development of students, beyond simply conveying content, and that realization was a culture shift. Any particular learning space makes it easier for faculty or students to engage in certain activities. The cost of adding more learning spaces when enrollments increase is certainly less for online courses.
