ABSTRACT

Surveys are one of the first data-generation methods that many people think of when they are first preparing to do research, possibly because they are relatively common in everyday life. The design of surveys can also appear quite straightforward or at least intuitive. Surveys are appropriate when researchers would like to get responses from a large number of people, when it’s important to collect consistent responses, or when researchers cannot talk directly to respondents. There are five aspects of survey design that require some thought. One of the most challenging things about surveys is getting sufficient responses to allow for a good analysis, and thinking through these aspects as carefully as possible will help to bring the response numbers up. Likert scales have become a standard feature of survey research. The name refers to scales that have respondents indicate which category their answer falls into.
