ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out to provide scaffolding for the literature review. Topics include reasons for reviewing the literature, three different types of literature review, and what to include in the review and where to get it. Whenever research moves away from the hegemonic knowledge of Western society, it is essential to recognize and incorporate a broad range of sources. Annotated bibliographies are lists of resources relevant to the research topic with added details and notes to help the researcher remember what the resources contain and the key contributions. While annotated bibliographies are built around a list of resources, synthetic reviews are created around themes or arguments based on bringing resources together. Systematic reviews begin by identifying a purpose, and in systematic reviews, this purpose is more like a research question than is usual for bibliographies or synthetic reviews.
