ABSTRACT

Emphasizing the value of collectivism, family, connection, and ancestral wisdom, this chapter offers insight into a multigenerational mentoring network, known as the Freedom Train. It highlights the formation of the Freedom Train mentoring network, its values, and processes. Drawing on three formal interviews with Dr. White and reflections from eight Freedom Train mentees, the chapter offers insights regarding their experiences with the Freedom Train, its values, teachings, practices, and impact. Higher education has roots of racial and ethnic segregation and exclusionary practices. Entrenched practices of racism and marginalization in education have long-term effects on the psychology of a group. The Freedom Train stresses the value of diversity and multiculturalism and embraces (and celebrates) a wide range of students of all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual orientations. Through holistic mentoring, the Freedom Train attends to both the professional and personal.
