ABSTRACT

Reviewing resumes and conducting interviews are necessary but are not sufficient for a thorough evaluation of candidates. Prudent search committees use multiple screening methods to increase the rigor of the search. The more fastidious the examination of candidates, the greater the likelihood that the selected candidate will be a good match for the position. Using multiple screening methods in the right combination is a matter of search committee art. Used in the right combination, additional screening methods virtually ensure a wise selection decision. Aside from a systematic review of written application materials, interviews are the second most commonly used screening technique. Portfolios are a useful screening method to ascertain the degree to which a candidate is qualified for a position. Additional screening methods are essential for ensuring sufficient rigor in every search. The insight provided with each added method helps committees make better decisions from among a smaller number of competitive candidates.
