ABSTRACT

Acting describes an appointment wherein the person who normally holds a position is not available. There is no vacancy, just a temporary absence of the person who normally holds a position, so the person who is acting is literally acting on behalf of the normal officeholder. An example would be an acting president because the president is ill, out of the country, or on a sabbatical. Acting candidates are assumed to hold the full power and authority of a position for a limited time. Acting is often confused with interim and the two terms are often used interchangeably, though technically they are different. Compensation is both an art and a science so it is often confusing trying to decipher how much an organization is willing to pay for a position. Two compensation ranges come into play.
