ABSTRACT

An analysis of internal factors should be undertaken to ensure that every position is necessary and, if so, that the institution is ready to conduct a search. Some work can be completed in ways that eliminate the continuing need for a particular position, such as distributing it among coworkers, abolishing it through the use of technology, having vendors provide it, or outsourcing it. Like a missing puzzle piece, a position vacancy exists within the context of a team, a department, and an organization. It interacts with other positions, and how it interconnects with others is a major consideration. Job requirements will naturally evolve over the time since the position was last vacant. Before commencing any search, answering the following questions will ensure that the search is grounded in the right ideas. It is prudent to consider departmental, institutional, and environmental factors that affect the new position and the team the new hire will join.
