ABSTRACT

The major focus of the interviews with the senior student affairs officers (SSAOs) was their experience with engagement in the six environmental components of leadership: cultural, social, physical, legal/political, resource, and ethical. The SSAOs were given an opportunity to talk about leadership and the need to refocus leadership energy and attention as leaders look to the future. The major areas that the SSAOs identified were related to academics: the academic mission and student satisfaction related to learning outcomes. The SSAOs stressed the increasing importance for SSAOs to focus their leadership on supporting the mission of the institution and to redirect the focus of the division's goals and strategies in this direction. According to the SSAOs, focusing only on student service or student development issues is no longer where student affairs divisions should place their energy.
