ABSTRACT

This chapter offers suggestions for working with faculty over time in developing teaching approaches and practices that address cultural differences. It provides suggestions for how faculty can influence colleagues in their own departments and academic communities to transform teaching across cultures to improve student learning, success, and retention. Seminars on integrating cultural strengths across teaching practices can be very helpful, especially to faculty who prefer to learn in groups and wish to gain discrete amounts of knowledge to apply to their teaching. Teaching institutes that take place over several days offer a chance to build relationships among faculty, hold the benefit of time away from campus and the institute in evenings for reflection and reading, and offer a chance for multiple modes of learning and practice when designed accordingly. Some faculty from our project have already presented formally at professional academic conferences on some aspect of what they learned about culturally balancing teaching practice.
