ABSTRACT

Daniel Goleman describes three steps in social awareness: having an awareness of another's inner state (empathy), forming a Theory of Mind about both their feelings and thoughts, and then developing an understanding what they are actually feeling and thinking. Higher education leadership takes courage, the ability to do hard things that might be criticized or misunderstood. Academic leaders can practice courage both with themselves and with their academic clients. Coaches can stimulate hope in their clients through two additional ways: guiding them to create visions for themselves and then guiding them to match those dreams with action steps. Many teachers insist on spending their time grinding out unhelpful rewrites of badly written student papers for their students, adding comments that the students will never read because nothing more is required of the papers. Working from an Empowering Heart leads to better quality, more creative work.
