ABSTRACT

The authors know that feelings affect rationality and memory and that the effects can be both bad and good for learning. They will have to be sophisticated about feelings if they are to help people learn! Strange as it may seem, understanding the brain can help us in this task. Ultimately they are at the mercy of their feelings, and if they are ever to become artful teachers, they must attend to this battle for attention. The rest of this chapter is about memory and feelings. Behaviors, beliefs, and feelings can all be stored in implicit memory, so when they want to help someone learn they must watch for these as well as for what they remember explicitly. The damage that intense feelings can do to long-term memory is probably a direct effect of our body talking to our brain by way of the chemicals circulating in our blood.
