ABSTRACT

As educators and policy analysts, each of us has experienced a very interesting response to the term diversity when teaching cultural pluralism or conducting workshops. Quite often the knee-jerk reaction, usually of White males, when asked what readily comes to mind when they hear the word diversity is, “Oh, you mean that racial minority stuff,” or “Here we go with the feminist agenda.” Others quickly jump in and add descriptors including affirmative action and quotas. These responses illustarte how important it is to acknowledge the compendium of differences and to call for reconceptualizing the way diversity is so frequently viewed and misunderstood.
