ABSTRACT

Women in academia continue to face additional challenges compared to their male colleagues. Women are less conditioned than men to ask for what they need and face greater social sanctions when they do speak up for themselves. Women of color and those from other historically underrepresented groups must also contend with biases related to race, ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation. As women become more senior, their service responsibilities grow. Many women who excelled as students and junior faculty members by accepting every invitation and being open and accessible now feel that their schedules are killing them. In 2011, White women composed 39.6% of the US population.
