ABSTRACT

At major research institutions, masterful teaching alone will not earn a professor tenure, but weak teaching can derail a tenure case even if the research record is strong. At teaching colleges, professors are expected to excel in the classroom while still producing original research and doing service. This chapter increases our confidence and effectiveness as a teacher and provides strategies to manage the workload. It discusses assessment, classroom climate, student engagement, online and blended classes, efficient grading, students’ biases, and support resources for teachers. Many professors teach classes that are part of a required sequence of courses that are based on standards against which the whole program is assessed. Students are supported in becoming metacognitive when instructors ask them to reflect on their learning processes.
