ABSTRACT

Written guidelines are frequently vague enough that even for an exemplary teacher with a solid service record and solo publications in top-tier journals, promotion is not guaranteed. This chapter starts with guidance on how to determine the expectations for tenure and promotion at our particular institution, and covers the central areas by which professors are evaluated, including research, teaching, service, collegiality, and grant funding. Teaching effectiveness is usually assessed using student evaluations and direct observation of the classroom. The teaching portfolio is a selection of materials that show the quality and breadth of a teacher’s work. It includes a statement of teaching philosophy; examples of course syllabi or assignments, with an explanation of how they were designed; samples of students’ work; and statements by colleagues who have observed classes or reviewed teaching material.
