ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 laid a foundation designed to help you better understand what cognitive psychologists study regarding how humans learn. In this chapter, I will extend that information by drawing on social psychology, which looks at how a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors affect themselves and other people (Kasin et al., 2021; Stangor et al., 2011). Much of this chapter pertains to an area of psychology called social cognition, which is a combination of cognitive psychology and social psychology. Social cognition is critical for learning in harmony with your brain, as our brains are wired for social interaction (Schmidt et al., 2021). Although social cognition makes learning and memory much more complicated, it is unbelievably rich and interesting, making it one of my favorite areas to teach.
