ABSTRACT

Does the title of this chapter scare you? “Terrified, mortified, petrified, stupefied of the title.” * Me too. Well, I've postponed the inevitable for four sentences. Time to hunker down. We have to tackle the two most important topics in scale construction: hokey and pokey. Oops! I mean validity and reliability. The title of this chapter is really misleading. You have actually been gathering barrels of evidence throughout all of the preceding chapters. That's kind of sneaky, I know, but you should know me pretty well by chapter 8. This chapter is the convergence of all of your work, including qualitative and quantitative results up to this point. The Holy Grail of rating scale construction (a.k.a. the Standards) will guide the criteria in this chapter as it has in every other one. This wacky, fun-filled romp through five types of validity evidence and three types of reliability evidence will be unforgettable. It concludes with an epilogue on the care and feeding of a rating scale.
