ABSTRACT

B road-based organizing “is a ‘relational’ and ‘institutional’ approach to social change that relies on the local knowledge of ordinary citizens to drive policy change and craft solutions to some of our most vexing social problems” (Amos Institute of Public Life, 2017). As the term implies, this type of organizing focuses on building a collective of different types of institutions and groups (e.g., religious institutions, schools, unions, and nonprofit organizations), representing a diversity of ethnicities and political orientations. The type of organizing I have been practicing in higher education is broad based in the sense that it includes various stakeholders within and outside of higher education institutions. The following is a story of my work as an IAF broad-based organizer prior to working in higher education.
