ABSTRACT

Community-based research (CBR) is collaborative research between a university or college and the local community to address a community need. It is not a new strategy, but it has become increasingly prominent as higher education has been encouraged to be more responsive to community needs. Faculty have also encouraged community-based research to relate service-learning projects directly with student learning outcomes. Strand et al. (2003) identified three central features of CBR:

“A collaborative enterprise between academic researchers (professors and students) and community members.

Seeks to democratize knowledge by validating multiple sources of knowledge and promoting the use of multiple methods of discovery and dissemination.

A goal of social action for the purpose of achieving social change and social justice.” (p. 6)
