ABSTRACT
Colleges and universities in the United States constitutionally fall under the jurisdiction of the governments of each of the 50 states. Public institutions receive some proportion of their funding directly from the state government, and are obligated to comply with state statutes on issues ranging from setting tuition levels to demonstrating accountability on performance benchmarks.
