ABSTRACT

Sasha recalls a pleasant childhood. She was raised by her grandparents when her parents immigrated to the United States. When Sasha first arrived in California, she found herself in the middle of a wave of anti-immigrant sentiment fueled by then-Governor Pete Wilson. Despite the initial negative reception when she first arrived, Sasha dedicated herself to school and to learning English. Gradually, with each grade, her English improved and her academic accomplishments began to increase. In middle school, Sasha was bussed to another city because of overcrowding in her local school. She continued to be enrolled in the accelerated program. As Sasha transitioned into high school, the extent of her limitations as an undocumented student became even clearer.
