ABSTRACT

Raul was four years old when he came to the United States. As a child, he grew up with his mom and three older brothers. When he was young, Raul had a significant life experience that solidified his decision to go to college. When Raul started elementary school, he was placed in regular mainstream classes even though English was not his first language. As early as elementary school, Raul was involved in extracurricular activities, such as student council, which gave him the opportunity to connect with his teachers. In high school, Raul’s dedication and hard work paid off when he graduated valedictorian of his senior class. Raul acknowledges the many teachers who have helped him achieve his goal of getting into college. Raul often uses his mother, who has struggled to support him as a single parent, to motivate him.
