ABSTRACT

Jaime was four years old when his family came to the United States in search of better opportunities. He has endured frequent moves throughout his childhood. In Mexico, his father was a truck driver, an occupation that required his family to move around a lot. Jaime described his elementary school years as difficult both at home and at school. Middle school was the first time in Jaime’s life that his family did not move, allowing him to start and finish at the same school. Middle school was also when he began to connect with teachers who helped him succeed in school. Just as Jaime was beginning to establish roots at school, he learned that his family would be moving once again. Although socially he had a hard time establishing strong connections with his new friends, he continued to pursue his passion for music and excelled academically in high school. Jaime balanced family responsibilities with school and his extracurricular activities.
