ABSTRACT

In this book we highlight how equitable learning experiences and a sense of belonging are critical for students to thrive at institutions of higher education. Applying this to teaching signifies that courses, whether face- to-face, hybrid, or fully online, are designed to support a diverse student body to help all learners reach their potential. Inclusive instructors recognize that student diversity enhances the learning experience for everyone, and they affirm students’ social identities and take responsibility for creating inclusive learning experiences. Inclusive instructors outline a clear plan to ensure student success even before the course starts. The content of their courses is reflective of diverse contributions and perspectives and is accessible to their learners. They utilize a variety of strategies that help their students feel welcome in the class and ensure that even if discord occurs they restore a positive course climate. They are student-centered in their approaches to learning. We also highlight how there is not one approach to inclusive teaching. There are many strategies and practices that can be adopted to support diverse learners.
