ABSTRACT

Gaduate school is a wonderful, heady time for students, particularly those working toward the highest achievement, the PhD. It is a time when long-term friendships are formed, and a time when the discussion in seminars, classes, and with other graduate students focuses on intellectual life. Yes, there are financial worries, given the expenses and the low pay. Yes, there are the problems of maturing for students fresh out of undergraduate school, and the problems of reentering academia after a long time away for students over 30. Nonetheless, it is a marvelous time in your life, and one that you, like today's professors, will look back on fondly.
