ABSTRACT

In these hints we described life based on our own experiences (and mistakes) as well as on observing our colleagues at universities throughout the country. We did not try to quote the many learned studies of academe by academics nor paint a picture of the ideal world that academe should be. For example, we believe, as most aspiring academics do, that teaching should be more respected and rewarded than it is, but we know that in many institutions teaching is a necessary but far from sufficient condition for tenure.
