ABSTRACT
We put our thoughts on the dissertation into this early chapter because for readers who are graduate students, the dissertation is the largest single hurdle they must leap over to achieve the PhD. This chapter is supplemented by Appendix A, which describes the mechanics involved in the end stages of the dissertation process once it has been written and approved by the adviser. The appendix covers the time from the oral defense to handing the dissertation in to the registrar.
